Designers Youju Lee and Yongjoon Jhoo Introduce a Revolutionary Desk Lamp

The inspiration behind Enlighten stems from the changing dynamics of workspaces. With the rise of digital tools, the designers noticed that users often switch between apps on their screens, interrupting their workflow. Enlighten was designed to address this issue, turning any surface into a smart surface. It consists of two projectors that cover the desk and wall separately, and a depth camera that traces users' movements. Users can display content around the desk and control various apps with their fingers, improving work efficiency.

Enlighten stands out due to its unique properties. It is made from ABS Plastic, Steel, Aluminum, Polyester powder coating, and Paint, using CNC technology. The lamp measures 500mm in width, 100mm in depth, and 550mm in height. The design process took place in Pasadena, CA, USA, from April to September 2017.

The designers conducted extensive research to create a 'Control Tower' for the workspace. They conducted several direct user interviews and various rehearsals to understand the materials users interact with and how to enhance the user experience. The main challenge was to improve the user's workflow and find the best way to handle multiple streams of information simultaneously.

Enlighten is more than just a smart desk lamp. It allows users to arrange content around their desk as they wish, freeing them from the limitations of a monitor screen. It enhances security when turned off and helps users keep their desk clean and neat. The design has been recognized for its innovation, winning the Silver A' Digital and Electronic Device Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
